History of Yamunotri

Yamunotri Dham is one of the most sacred destinations in India. A visit to the temple is believed to cast off the dangers of agonizing or untimely death. It is believed that the King of Tehri, Naresh Sudarshan Shah, built the Yamunotri Temple in 1839. The temple houses idols of Goddess Ganga as well as Yamuna.

River Yamuna is known to be Sandhya Devi and Surya Dev's daughter. The river's frivolous and playful nature is often attributed to Sandhya Devi her mother not being able to meet the bright gaze of the Sun God during love-making. Yam Dev is believed to be the brother of River Yamuna in Indian mythology.

What forms Yamunotri Temple's premises today used to be the home of Sage Asit in the olden days. As a part of his routine, he often used to bathe in the holy waters of both Yamuna and Ganga.
