About the 4 Temples of Char Dham Yatra

Before we move ahead, let us know the significance of the four famous temples of the Char Dham Yatra. Each temple has its own spiritual significance and beliefs.

1. Yamunotri Temple

It will be the first destination. Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, this temple is situated in the Garhwal Himalayas and is known to be the starting point of the River Yamuna. It is famous for the hot water springs, where pilgrims can take a holy dip.

2. Gangotri Temple

The next Dham is Gangotri, where the River Ganga first touched earth. Located along the Bhagirathi River, this temple is known for its peaceful surroundings and spiritual significance.

3. Kedarnath Temple

Situated at a very high altitude (11,755 feet) and surrounded by high peaks of the Himalayas, Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Even though this is the most difficult trek of the Yatra, the eye-catching surroundings and the peaceful atmosphere up there will give the best spiritual experience.

4. Badrinath Temple

The final stop is Badrinath, which is located along the Alaknanda River. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to be the most important of the four Dhams.

Guptkashi

Guptkashi holds immense religious significance, offering two renowned temples: The Vishwanath Temple, which is similar to the famous temple in Varanasi, and the Ardhanarishvara temple, which enshrines the feminine and masculine aspects of Parvati and Shiva respectively.

It is considered on par with Varanasi in terms of religious significance, especially because of the connection with the Pandavas of the Mahabharata. The legend has it that Shiva came here with the proposal of marriage to Parvati before their divine marriage at the site of Son Ganga and the River Mandakini at Triyuginarayan village.

Another story narrates that when Aurangzeb destroyed the Kashi Vishwanath Temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque in 1669, the Shiva Linga was shifted to Guptkashi.

  • After this, continue the night stay at Kedarnath Ji or take shelter at Sitapur, according to your convenience.

Kedarnath

Kedarnath Dham is located near the head of the Mandakini River in the state of Uttarakhand. It is situated amidst the Himalayas at a high altitude of 3,584 metres above sea level. This is a huge religious point of interest that houses the ancient temple of Lord Shiva, settled amidst the panoramic views of the rhododendron forests and snow-capped mountains.

As per the legend, after the Kurukshetra war, Pandavas went to seek the blessing of Lord Shiva in Banaras. However, to find solitude, Lord Shiva decided to reside in the form of buffalo in Guptkashi. One day, Bhima, one of the Pandavas, came across him and attempted to capture him. To avoid this, Lord Shiva took a dive in the ground and disappeared, leaving behind his hump. Pandavas built a shrine here and it is the present-day Kedarnath Temple.

Kedarnath Weather

Kedarnath has a freezing climate throughout the year, even in summer. Located at a high altitude of over 3,500 metres, Kedarnath has temperatures that range below 20 degrees Celsius. During winter, the temperatures drop even further – making it a very cold, freezing season.

Q4. How much money is required for the Char Dham Yatra?

Ans. The standard 10-day package starts at ₹45,000 per person, covering transportation, accommodation, meals, and guided support. Costs may increase if you opt for premium facilities like helicopter transfers or luxury accommodations.

Q5. What is the total duration of the Char Dham Yatra from Haridwar?

Ans. On average, the Char Dham Yatra by road takes around 10–12 days, covering the four temples, including rest days, sightseeing, and travel between destinations. Whereas, helicopter-based VIP packages cover the journey for 5–6 days.

Q6. Is the Kedarnath and Yamunotri trek safe for senior citizens and children?

Ans. Yes, both the treks are safe. Yamunotri Dham is 6 km from Janki Chatti. It will take 3 to 4 hours on foot. If walking feels difficult, ponies or palkis are available right at the start. They are very safe and take about 2 hours to reach the top. Kedarnath Dham is 16 km from Gaurikund. It would take 6 to 10 hours on foot. It is an uphill climb that is exhausting even for adults. For a safe and comfortable trip, we highly recommend booking a helicopter (in advance) or going for reliable options like pony/kandi.
