Kedarnath is believed to be one of the most pious places in Hinduism, and each Hindu dreams of completing this ‘Yatra’ at least once in their lifetime.
The name ‘Kedarnath’ means ‘the Lord of the field’: It is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Kedara’ meaning field and ‘Natha’ meaning Lord. The text ‘Kashi Kedara Mahatmya’ or the ‘importance of Kashi (Varanasi in Bihar) and Kedarnath’ states that it is so called because "the crop of Liberation" grows here.
Moreover, it’s one of the most revered Jyotirlingas and also one of the Panch Kedars – multiplying its spiritual significance twofold!

The Kedarnath Dham opened on 2 May 2025 and will continue to stay accessible to the public until November 6 (tentative). However, the best time to go there is during the summer. Another great period to visit is during the autumn season. Here’s a complete breakdown of the seasons:
May-June is considered to be the best time to visit Kedarnath as the weather remains warm and comfortable. The average temperature during these months is around 17-30 degrees Celsius. The weather is warm and pleasant, making you feel at comfort and ease as you explore the region. It is the ideal time for a spiritual getaway, allowing you to experience the dazzling landscape of the region.
From July to August, Kedarnath experiences the monsoon season. It is not a good time to visit Kedarnath as there are chances of heavy rainfall, and roads are also blocked during this time of the year due to landslides. It's best to avoid this window.
In this period, you get to soak in the lush greenery that the monsoon leaves behind. The weather is delightful for the most part. However, pack warm clothes as it's colder than summer.
You should avoid visiting Kedarnath in the winter season due to the chances of heavy snowfall and extreme weather conditions. During winter the temperature drops down to sub-zero levels making it very difficult to explore the area.
There are multiple ways via which you can reach the sacred Dham:
The closest airport to Kedarnath is Jolly Grant Airport, which is situated in Dehradun at a distance of around 238 km. The airport has good connectivity with Delhi. From the airport to Gaurikund, taxis are easily available.
Rishikesh is the nearest railway station to Kedarnath situated on NH58 at a distance of around 216 km before Kedarnath. Further, Sonprayag has good connectivity with Rishikesh by motorable roads. Buses and taxis are available easily to reach Gaurikund.
Buses to Srinagar and Rishikesh are available from Kashmiri Gate, ISBT. From Haridwar, Rudraprayag, and Rishikesh, buses and shared cabs are available to Sonprayag, the last point up to which you can take private vehicles. Before reaching Kedarnath, you will have to reach Gaurikund, which is the last motorable point. From Gaurikund, you'll have to undertake a 16 km long trek to Kedarnath.
If you do not want to trek to Kedarnath, you can opt for a helicopter ride. You can opt for helicopter services from different helipads such as Phata, Guptkashi, Sersi, etc. Also, most helicopter packages include a VIP Pass, which lets you skip queues and go straight for the Darshan. Moreover, the heli services fill up fast. It’s best if you book them in advance.
The weather in the hilly areas is quite cold. Moreover, it can rain anytime, owing to the unpredictable weather there. It’s best to bring with you the following items:
In addition, don’t forget to bring your Yatra e-pass and government ID.
