Distance
From Gaurikund, the Kedarnath trek is 16 to 18 kilometers long. At Sonprayag most travelers arrive by taxi. However, from Gaurikund the actual trek begins, which is 5 km ahead of Sonprayag. Shared taxis take you to Gaurikund from Sonprayag—but during peak season the ride can be chaotic, so you need to plan for some waiting time.
Duration
You should start your trek early in the morning with ample breaks for soaking in the breathtaking views, rest, and snacks. Though some people can even take up to 10 hours depending on their fitness level.
On the first day of the trek, you need to cover around 6-7 km from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. The trail passes through some of the most scenic locations including Bheembali, Rambara, Jungle Chatti, Channi Camp, and Linchauli which are famous camping sites. You’ll also find a hot water spring.
On the second day, you will visit Kedarnath Temple and explore the nearby areas that are known for their natural beauty. You’ll then return back to Gaurikund. It will take around 5-6 hours to complete the return journey and you’ll have to cover around 9km of distance.

- Jungle Chatti- While embarking on Kedarnath Trek, Jungle Chatti will be the first major resting point for the pilgrims. From here you will start the uphill trekking after the shared road from Gaurikund road ends. It is 4 km away from Gaurikund. - Ram Bara– Ram Bara, also known as Rambara bridge is a beautiful landmark located 6 km away from Gaurikund. Here you will witness the most scenic views of the sacred Mandakini river. You will get basic facilities like tea stalls and small food joints. The facilities are limited at this point as it was destroyed in 2013 flood, later it is reconstructed for the pilgrims.
- Linchauli- It is also one of the major stops on Kedarnath Trek route which is located 11km from Gaurikund. It is the last resting point before the major steep ascent in the 16km trek.
- Channi Camp– Located between Linchauli and Rudra point, Channi Camp is a beautiful camping point for the pilgrims. From here, you will get the most captivating views of Kedarnath and other surrounding majestic peaks. It’s not a full village like stop but a minor halt for quick short breaks between Linchauli and Kedarnath base Camp.
