Kedarnath Yatra Route Map Guide

Thousands of devotees travel to Kedarnath from across India every year — from Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, and beyond. This pilgrimage covers different cities including Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar Garhwal, and Rudraprayag before culminating in a 16 km trek from Gaurikund to the holy shrine of Lord Shiva.

Despite being physically demanding due to steep slopes and rough terrain, the journey allows travellers to fully embrace the beauty of the Himalayas. The Kedarnath Temple is among the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas in India and is nestled at an elevation of 3,583 metres above sea level. The temple opens on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya and closes on a date announced by the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) each year — typically in November.

Day 2 Haridwar → Guptkashi Mountain drive via Devprayag, Rudraprayag (~7–8 hrs, ~220 km). Overnight Guptkashi.
Day 3 Guptkashi → Gaurikund → Kedarnath Drive to Sonprayag, shared jeep to Gaurikund. Trek 16 km or helicopter to Kedarnath. Evening darshan, Sandhya Aarti (7:30 PM). Overnight near temple.

Day 5 Guptkashi/Rudraprayag → Delhi Return drive via Rishikesh, Haridwar (~7–8 hrs). Drop at Delhi or Haridwar.

Why overnight at Kedarnath on Day 3 matters: The Abhishek Puja at 4:30 AM — the ritual bathing of the Lord Shiva Jyotirlinga — happens with very few pilgrims present. This is the most spiritually significant experience of the entire Yatra. Day-trip pilgrims miss this entirely.

Mandatory Yatra Registration — Do This Before Travel

Every pilgrim must register before beginning the Kedarnath Yatra.

Register free at: registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in

Also via WhatsApp: Send “YATRA” to +91-8394833833

In 2026, biometric Aadhaar-based registration is compulsory. Each person registers individually and receives a Yatra Registration Number (YRN) — checked at multiple checkpoints. Pilgrims without YRN are turned back at entry points.

Do not collect YRN from travel agents or unofficial sources — register only through the official government portal.

Must Know Travel Tips for Kedarnath Yatra

1- Careful planning and preparation — Weather is unpredictable at higher altitudes. Check weather forecast at uttarakhandtourism.gov.in and plan accordingly. Never travel mountain roads at night.

2- Acclimatisation — Travellers, especially those with altitude or motion sickness, should plan one extra day at Guptkashi (1,319m) before ascending to Kedarnath (3,583m). Taking proper rest and drinking 3–4 litres of water daily helps avoid altitude sickness.

3- Fitness check — Since this pilgrimage site is at 3,583m, a fitness check before embarking is essential. Pilgrims above 50 should carry a medical fitness certificate from a registered doctor confirming cardiovascular and respiratory fitness for high-altitude travel. Those with BP, heart, or respiratory conditions must consult their doctor before booking — not as a formality but as a genuine health precaution at this altitude.

4- Accommodation — If planning to visit Kedarnath in peak season (May–June), book accommodation 45–60 days in advance. Options near the temple include GMVN guesthouses (book at gmvnl.com), private guesthouses, and tented camps.

5- Temple darshan timings 2026:

Session Timing
Abhishek Puja (most auspicious) 4:30 AM
Morning darshan opens 6:00 AM
Mid-day closure 12:00 noon
Evening darshan opens 4:00 PM
Sandhya Aarti 7:30 PM
Temple closes 9:00 PM

Arrive at the temple gate 30 minutes before your preferred session. During peak season (May–June), VIP darshan arrangements significantly reduce queue time.

6- Temple guidelines — Dress modestly. Remove shoes before entering. Maintain silence inside the sanctum. Photography is restricted inside the inner chamber.

7- Required documents — Valid photo ID (Aadhaar card, passport, voter ID, or driving licence). Yatra Registration Number (YRN) — printed copy + digital copy saved offline. Helicopter booking confirmation if applicable. Medical fitness certificate if you are above 50.

8- Emergency contacts — Save the Disaster Management Control Room number: 1070 and 9557444486. Also save your tour operator’s 24×7 support number before departure.

9- Food guide — Take a light breakfast before starting the trek. Carry energy bars, dry fruits, and glucose biscuits for the 16 km route. Do not eat heavy meals before the uphill section. Tea stalls and basic food available every 2–3 km on the trail.

10- Cash and payments — Carry ₹3,000–₹5,000 cash from Haridwar. ATMs are not reliably available beyond Rishikesh during peak season. Carry a power bank and mobile charger — power cuts are common in mountain towns.

11- Start the trek early — Begin from Gaurikund by 5–6 AM. Weather at Kedarnath deteriorates after noon. Early starts also avoid crowd build-up on the trail and give you the most peaceful temple experience.
